Rit Van Es —
A life in colour

"Creativity knows no age, and passion only deepens with time."

In April 1992, at the age of 51, Rit picked up a paintbrush for the very first time — unknowingly beginning a creative journey that would shape the rest of her life. With acrylics, cardboard as her canvas, and pure intuition as her guide, she began creating abstract works that reflected her inner world.

More than three decades later, at 85, art remains the driving force in Rit's life. Each painting is a personal exploration of colour, emotion, and movement — no rules, no expectations. Only expression. For Rit, painting is not a hobby. It is a calling.

Her signature technique — mixing raw sand directly into her acrylic paint — gives every work a texture and physical depth that no photograph can fully capture. The surface shifts with the light, alive in a way that demands to be seen in person.

How she works

The making of
a Rit painting

No sketches, no plans. Every work begins the same way — with a blank surface and an open mind. The rest reveals itself.

01

Intuition

No rules, no expectations. The first marks arrive from instinct alone — pure feeling translated directly into colour and form.

02

Layering

Colours are built up slowly, each layer informing the next. The painting grows organically, never forced.

03

Discovery

Somewhere in the process, the painting finds its own identity. Rit follows rather than leads — the work knows where it's going.

04

Completion

A painting is finished not when everything is added, but when nothing needs to change. That moment is unmistakable.
